EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction — a project delivery model where a single contractor is responsible for designing the system, sourcing the materials and equipment, and building or installing it, all under one contract. "Turnkey" means the contractor hands over a complete, ready-to-operate system — the client can, in principle, simply turn the key and start using it.
How is turnkey EPC different from hiring separate contractors?
In a traditional multi-contractor approach, a client hires separate firms for design, equipment supply, and installation, and takes on the responsibility of coordinating between them. If something falls through the cracks between the designer's specification and the installer's execution, the client is often the one caught in the middle. Under a turnkey EPC contract, that coordination risk sits with a single contractor instead, who is accountable for the outcome as a whole.
What does an EPC contractor typically handle?
For an electrical EPC project, that generally spans load calculations and system design, panel and switchgear specification and manufacturing, cabling and installation, testing and commissioning, and documentation and handover — end to end, rather than any one piece in isolation.
When does turnkey EPC make sense?
It tends to suit projects where the client wants a single point of accountability and doesn't have in-house engineering capacity to manage multiple vendors — new industrial plants, large commercial developments, and infrastructure projects with tight interdependencies between disciplines are common cases.
