Electrical control panels sit at the center of a facility's power distribution — a poorly built one is a long-term liability, not a one-time cost. A few practical things are worth checking before choosing a supplier.
Is the panel type-tested?
Type-tested panels have been verified against relevant standards — such as IEC 61439 for low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies — under controlled test conditions like short-circuit withstand and temperature rise, rather than relying solely on the individual components inside being rated correctly. Ask whether the panel design itself, not just its parts, has been type-tested.
In-house manufacturing vs. outsourced assembly
Some "manufacturers" actually outsource fabrication to third-party job shops and simply brand the finished product. In-house manufacturing gives a supplier direct control over build quality, lead times, and after-sales support, since design, fabrication, and testing all happen under one roof rather than across a subcontracted chain.
What quality checks should happen before delivery?
At minimum: dielectric/insulation resistance testing, functional testing of protection devices, wiring and torque checks, and a final visual/dimensional inspection against the approved drawing. Ask a prospective supplier what their factory acceptance testing (FAT) process actually includes before you sign off.
Track record and scale
A manufacturer's history matters — how long they've been building panels, how many they've delivered, and for what industries. A supplier with pharmaceutical or GMP-facility experience, for example, understands cleanroom and validation requirements that a general industrial panel builder may not.
