LT vs HT Electrical Panels: What's the Difference?

LT (low tension) and HT (high tension) refer to the voltage class of an electrical panel, not its physical size. LT panels handle low-voltage distribution โ€” generally up to 1,000V โ€” while HT panels handle high-voltage systems, typically above 1,000V and often into the 11kV–33kV range used for industrial substations and large facility incoming supply.

What is an LT panel used for?

LT panels distribute low-voltage power within a facility — to individual machines, lighting circuits, motors, and general building loads. Most commercial buildings, and the majority of equipment on an industrial shop floor, run on LT power. Common LT panel types include Main LT Panels (MLTP), Power Control Centres (PCC), and Motor Control Centres (MCC).

What is an HT panel used for?

HT panels sit further upstream in the power distribution chain — typically where grid power first enters a facility, or between a substation and the transformers that step voltage down for LT use. HT panels and switchgear are engineered to handle higher fault currents and require stricter clearances, interlocking, and protection systems than LT equipment.

How do I know which one my project needs?

Most facilities need both: HT equipment at the incoming supply and substation level, and LT panels distributing power from there to individual loads. The right configuration depends on your total connected load, whether you're drawing power directly from a utility's HT network, and local electricity board requirements — an engineering assessment during the design phase is the reliable way to determine this, not a rule of thumb.
